Types of Residential Storm Shelters
There are two primary residential shelter types:
*Underground in-ground shelters* are the most common and most effective. A reinforced concrete vault — either pre-cast and delivered, or poured in place — installed below grade in your backyard or under your garage floor. The shelter is fully buried, with a reinforced steel hatch at ground level as the only access point. A direct tornado strike passes over without affecting the structure below.
*Above-ground safe rooms* are steel or concrete structures built inside or attached to an existing home — typically a closet-sized room with a reinforced door and anchored foundation. They provide significant protection and are easier to access during a fast-moving storm, but they're not rated for the same level of protection as an in-ground unit in a direct strike.
For the highest level of protection — and for families who have the yard space — underground is the choice. Above-ground rooms are a practical alternative for properties where excavation isn't feasible.
Site Selection: Where to Put It
The two most common locations for residential underground shelters in Wilson County:
*Backyard installation* gives maximum flexibility in shelter size and design. The shelter is placed in a clear area of the yard, excavated and backfilled, with only the hatch visible at grade. Access from the house requires walking outside — a consideration during fast-moving storms where warning time may be short.
*Garage floor installation* puts the shelter under the garage slab. Access is through a hatch in the floor — you can get to it without going outside. This is a significant advantage during short-warning tornado events. The tradeoff is more complex installation (existing slab must be cut and removed) and constraints on shelter size based on garage dimensions.

Clay Soil: The Challenge Specific to Middle Tennessee

Unlike sandy or loamy soil that allows water to drain away from an underground structure, clay creates a bowl effect — water that gets in tends to stay in and pool around the structure. What Installation Involves
A standard residential underground shelter installation runs:
*Day 1:* Utility locating and surface mark-out. Excavation to depth — typically 6–10 feet depending on shelter size and design. Pre-cast shelter delivery and placement (craned or tracked in). Base leveling and anchor work.
*Day 1–2:* Drainage installation around and beneath the shelter. Waterproofing membrane application where specified. Backfill in compacted lifts.
*Day 2:* Hatch and entry finishing. Grade restoration. Cleanup. Sod or seed over the disturbed area to restore the yard.
Total calendar time: 1–2 days for most standard residential installations. Poured-in-place concrete vaults take longer due to form work, pour, and cure time — typically 4–7 days from excavation to completion.
