The combination of heavy clay soil that doesn't absorb water well, significant grade changes on many properties, and frequent intense rain events creates conditions where slopes erode unless specifically designed not to. Here's what works — and why some approaches don't last.

Why Tennessee Slopes Erode

The core problem is infiltration rate. Middle Tennessee's clay-heavy soils absorb water slowly — often only 0.1–0.5 inches per hour. When a summer storm drops 1–2 inches in 45 minutes, the soil can't absorb it fast enough. Water sheets across the surface, and on any slope, that sheet flow accelerates and carries soil particles with it.

Erosion isn't random — it follows water paths. The characteristic rill channels you see cutting across slopes develop where surface water concentrates.

Solutions Ranked from Temporary to Permanent

*Temporary: Erosion control blanket + seeding* Biodegradable or photodegradable blankets hold soil while grass establishes. This is the right first step after any disturbed area on a slope. Seed a mix appropriate for Tennessee slopes (often a mix of tall fescue, annual ryegrass for quick cover, and native grasses). Works well on moderate slopes (under 3:1) that will eventually be covered in vegetation.
