A natural gas connection requires running a gas line — which adds to installation cost but eliminates the need to manage propane tanks. Gas fire pits are the better choice for formal patios and HOA-governed communities.

Integration with Seating and Hardscape

Standalone fire rings are functional, but built-in fire pits integrated into a paver patio with surrounding seating walls are transformative. When the fire pit is designed as part of the patio — same material, same elevation, with matching stone or cap — it feels intentional rather than afterthought.

Seating walls around a fire pit create natural, comfortable seating at the right distance from the fire. Adding cushion storage nearby or integrating side tables into the design makes the space highly functional.

Sizing Considerations

A fire pit's diameter determines how many people can comfortably gather around it and view the fire. For intimate use — a couple or small family — a 30-36 inch interior fire ring is appropriate. For entertaining larger groups, 44-48 inches allows more people a good viewing angle.

Height matters too. Fire pits that double as low tables when unlit (typically 18-20 inches high) are versatile. Taller units can be uncomfortable for seating at normal chair height.

Gas Fire Pit Safety

If you choose a gas fire pit, ensure proper installation by a qualified professional. The gas line, connector, and ignition system need to meet code requirements. A proper electronic ignition is worth the investment over a match-light system for ease and safety.
