Fall Landscaping and Yard Prep for Lebanon, TN Homeowners
Fall is the most important season for your Lebanon, TN lawn and landscape — far more so than spring. Here's what to do and exactly when, from aeration to plant protection to irrigation winterization.
Most Middle Tennessee homeowners spend more effort on spring landscaping than fall. That's backwards. Fall is the single most important season for establishing a healthy lawn and protecting your landscape investment. Here's the complete fall checklist for Lebanon, TN and Wilson County.
September: Lawn Renovation Window
The first two weeks of October is peak overseeding time for Lebanon, TN fescue lawns — but the work starts in September.
*Core aerate in late September.* Aerating pulls small plugs of soil from your lawn, creating channels for water, air, and seed to reach the root zone. Do this before overseeding, not after. Run the aerator in two perpendicular directions for best coverage.
*Overseed immediately after aeration.* Plant turf-type tall fescue seed while soil temperatures are still in the 65–70°F range. The aeration holes provide perfect seed-to-soil contact. Apply starter fertilizer at the same time.
*Continue watering daily until germination.* New seed needs consistent moisture for 10–14 days. If you don't have irrigation, plan to hand-water or use temporary sprinklers. Letting newly planted seed dry out kills it.
October: The Critical Month
*Pre-emergent for winter weeds.* Once your overseeded grass is mowed twice and established, apply a pre-emergent to suppress chickweed, henbit, and annual bluegrass — the winter weeds that take over Lebanon lawns by January if left unchecked.
*Plant trees and shrubs.* Fall is the best time to plant in Middle Tennessee. Soil is still warm enough for root establishment, but the plant isn't pushing top growth that competes with root development. Trees and shrubs planted in October establish significantly better than those planted in spring in our climate.
*Divide and transplant perennials.* Overgrown perennial clumps (daylilies, ornamental grasses, hostas) are best divided in fall. Divide, replant, and water well before the ground freezes.
*Clean and edge beds.* Remove summer annuals, cut back perennials that are done for the season, and refresh bed edges. Fresh mulch applied in fall moderates soil temperature through winter and protects roots.
November: Winterization
*Irrigation winterization is non-negotiable.* Lebanon, TN gets hard freezes that burst irrigation pipes and damage backflow preventers left full of water. Blow out your irrigation system before the first hard freeze — typically in November. Don't wait for a freeze warning — schedule it proactively.
*Wrap tender plants if necessary.* Young or marginally hardy plants benefit from burlap wrapping or freeze cloth when temperatures below 20°F are forecast. Established plants in our zone usually don't need it.
*Final mow.* Mow your fescue lawn to 3–3.5 inches before going into winter. Taller grass can mat under snow and ice; shorter grass is more vulnerable to winter kill. The 3–3.5 inch range is the right balance for Middle Tennessee winters.
*Leaf management.* Don't let heavy leaf accumulation sit on your lawn through December. Matted leaves block sunlight and air circulation, causing fungal issues and killing turf beneath. Mulch them with a mulching mower, rake, or hire a leaf removal service.
December–February: Monitor and Maintain
Most landscape maintenance stops, but a few things deserve attention:
- Check mulch levels in beds after freeze-thaw cycles — add if needed
- Inspect trees after ice storms for broken limbs that need removal
- Keep an eye on any marginally hardy plants through cold snaps
- Plan next year's landscape projects (now is the time to schedule early, before spring booking fills up)
