Choosing the right paver style is one of the most impactful design decisions you'll make for your outdoor space. The wrong choice can clash with your home's architecture; the right one ties the entire exterior together.

Start with Your Home's Architectural Style

Traditional homes with brick exteriors or colonial details look best with classic rectangular pavers in warm tones — red, tan, charcoal, or buff. Patterns like running bond or herringbone reinforce the structured, formal aesthetic.

Craftsman and farmhouse homes pair beautifully with natural flagstone or tumbled concrete pavers that have irregular edges and earthy, organic tones. The slight imperfection in the material matches the handcrafted character of the architecture.

Modern and contemporary homes call for clean, large-format pavers — 12x24 or 24x24 slabs in cool grays, charcoal, or even porcelain. Tight joints and grid patterns reinforce the minimalist design language.

Consider Your Climate

Tennessee's climate includes freeze-thaw cycles in winter, intense summer heat, and significant rainfall. Not all paver materials handle these equally well. Concrete pavers with proper base preparation are excellent performers. Natural travertine can crack in severe freezes if not properly installed. Paver colors look dramatically different in a showroom versus in direct Tennessee sunlight. Always request samples and place them on your actual project site at different times of day before making a final selection.
